Whether it’s a presentation, a video, or a logo design, the creative process follows the same path—it’s a puzzle.
Have you ever attempted a 1,500-piece jigsaw puzzle? If you’re new to puzzles, it can feel impossible. During lockdown, my family and I tackled plenty of them. We started with the simple ones—the 250-piece kid-friendly puzzles—which built our confidence to take on larger, more complex ones. And every single time, the process was exactly the same.
First, we’d spread all the pieces out on the table (which, for a while, meant no formal dining table for meals). Then we’d start sorting—separating the straight-edged border pieces, grouping colors, identifying patterns. Next, we’d piece together the obvious, easy sections, slowly building out the puzzle one small victory at a time.
Some days, things clicked, and the puzzle came together smoothly. Other times, we’d stare at the scattered pieces, feeling like we’d hit a dead end. But eventually, by chipping away at it, taking breaks when needed, and trusting the process, the impossible would come together. And that final piece? Pure magic.
When you start creating a presentation, it can feel like staring at 1,500 scattered pieces. Where do you even begin? The answer: Start small. Lay everything out, find the obvious connections, and begin assembling the framework. Just like a puzzle, some sections will come together quickly, while others will have you pulling your hair out. That’s normal. Keep going.
Or think of it as sculpting—it never starts as a masterpiece. It’s just a lump of clay. But with patience, persistence, and the courage to keep shaping and reshaping, something incredible emerges.
And when you’re really stuck? Step away. Give your brain a chance to reset. It’s amazing how solutions reveal themselves when you least expect them. (Also, nothing fuels creativity quite like a looming deadline!)
In the end, creative work is about commitment, patience, and fun. Keep pushing through the frustration, and you’ll find that moment of magic.
